Celebrating USANZ Members

Bladder Cancer

Bladder Cancer Australia (BCA) has published a media release, co-branded with USANZ, urging people not to ignore early symptoms of bladder cancer.

The story follows news of NFL Hall of Famer Deion Sanders who recently shared that he has undergone major bladder surgery. Deion's regular checkup detected cancer and he has subsequently received a neobladder.

The release includes commentary from USANZ President Damien Bolton and USANZ Member Nathan Lawrentshuk. They spoke about the importance of seeking medical advice for any early symptoms including blood in the urine, frequent/urgent urination, burning sensations when urinating, and lower abdominal or back pain. BCA also encouragse GPs and healthcare providers to continue educating patients about bladder health and, where appropriate, consider early urological referral.

Nocturia

The Age and Sydney Morning Herald published an article this week about nocturia, exploring the common condition resulting in the need to urinate through the night.

The article is titled: "The nocturnal habit impacting negatively on your health."

The article included an interview with USANZ Member Henry Woo in his role as Chair of the Male Lower Urinary Tract Specialty Advisory Group. Henry spoke about the impact of prostate blockage and OAB, as well as discussing other potential causes including diabetes, sleep apnoea, medication, water retention, drinking too much water before bed, and drinking alcohol.

We're pleased to see USANZ Members continuing to provide expert commentary about Urology topics in the media.

Prostate Cancer

USANZ Member Prof Shomik Sengupta was featured in a recent edition of the RACS publication Surgical News.

With prostate cancer increasingly being seen in younger patients, the article discusses the importance of building awareness and engagement.

As shared in the article, Shomik has developed a website to provide guidance on testing and treatments for GPs and the wider community.
