Spotlight on Urology
Spotlight on Urology takes a look at recent activities undertaken to advance urology around the world. This week we cover media on the topic of penile cancer.
Penile Cancer
The Age recently published an article about a patient, Wayne Earle, who underwent a penectomy following a diagnosis of penile cancer.
Expert commentary was provided by USANZ Member Dixon Woon, who is the Deputy Leader of the USANZ Genitourinary Oncology Special Advisory Group. Dixon spoke about the benefits of circumcision and the HPV vaccination, as well as the importance of reducing stigma around the disease as early detection remains crucial for survivial.
In addition, the article featured insights from Maarten Albersen, who recently joined us in Melbourne as part of the International Faculty for the 2026 ASM. Maarten wrote about the particular issues associated with penile cancer as it directly affects "a part of the body that is fundamental to sexual function and selfperception," noting that patients suffer psychologically as well as facing functional and aesthetic challenges.
The story, entitled "The silent rise of stigmatised cancer", ran in the print edition as well as online for several Nine Entertainment newspapers, including The Age, Sydney Morning Herald, WA Today and Brisbane Times.

Thank you, Dixon and Maarten, for lending your expertise to this public conversation.
