Spotlight on Urology
Spotlight on Urology takes a look at recent activities undertaken to advance urology around the world. This week we cover a media release on testicular cancer as well as a Highly-Cited Paper Award from the International Journal of Urology.
Testicular Cancer Awareness Month
April is Testicular Cancer Awareness Month. USANZ produced a Media Release addressing this issue, with expert commentary provided by Weranja Ranasinghe, USANZ Genitourinary Oncology SAG Leader. The focus was on the importance of men spending just two minutes checking themselves at the end of their shower, looking for any lumps/swelling or any changes.
This release has since generated media attention.
Adelaide Now published an online article focused on a related patient case study of schoolteacher Daniel Bryant, who ignored an enlarged testicle for several months before being diagnosed in 2018 with a 20cm metastasised tumour wrapped around his abdominal blood vessels. Against the odds, Daniel had a successful surgery and has since recovered, but is now encouraging other men to seek advice from a doctor about any unusual symptoms. The article ended with Weranja's expert advice about testicular cancer statistics and the importance of self-examination.

In addition, Spence Denny for ABC SA & NT Evenings interviewed both Weranja and Daniel on 31 March. Daniel shared openly about noticing the enlarged testicle at age 38 but did not get it checked. He only sought doctor advice after stomach pain, finding enlarged lymph nodes which led to a testicular cancer diagnosis. He subsequently underwent 8 surgeries as well as 3 months of chemotherapy.
Weranja was asked about the current incidence of testicular cancer, especially amongst young men, and emphasised that testicular cancer is highly curable if detected early. He also spoke about risk factors and the importance of educating the public including for regular self-examination at least once a month.
Listen to the ABC interview (begins at 2.10).
Ongoing coverage of this important issue will be provided in future issues of UroNews.
