Spotlight on Urology

Spotlight on Urology takes a look at recent activities undertaken to advance urology around the world. This week’s UroNews celebrates USANZ trainees representing Australia on the international stage. We share reports from two trainees who attended the UAA Congress in Manila and another two who took part in EUREP 2026 in Prague, reflecting on what they learned and the connections they made.

UAA Wrap Up

The Urological Association of Asia (UAA) Congress was held in Manila, Philippines from 3–6 September 2026. The meeting brought together urologists from across the region to share research, clinical experience and developments in urological care. USANZ was represented at the meetiing by President Damien Bolton.

As part of the Trainee Exchange Program, USANZ trainees Mo Li and Tom Clarkson attended the Asian Urology Residents’ Course (AURC) and the UAA Congress. Their participation was made possible through the generous support of the Australasian Urological Foundation (AUF).

Mo and Tom provided a report about their experiences. They describe the value of learning alongside trainees from across Asia. Discussions about different healthcare systems gave them a fresh perspective on the challenges faced where resources are limited. At the Congress, they saw emerging technologies on display, including new robotic platforms and a live demonstration of remote robotic surgery.

They also enjoyed the warm hospitality of their Filipino hosts, made new friendships and even joined a local urologist to form what they called the first Oceania–Asian urological band!

Thank you to Mo and Tom for sharing their experiences, and to Professor Bolton for representing USANZ in Manila.

EUREP

The Trainee Exchange Program also saw USANZ trainees Bishoy Hanna and Jiasian Teh attend the European Urology Residents Education Programme (EUREP), which was held in Prague from 4–9 September 2026. This was possible due to support from USANZ and the Australasian Urological Foundation (AUF).

In their report, Bishoy and Jiasian reflect on six days of lectures, case discussions, surgical videos and practical workshops. They particularly valued the hands-on training in endourology, laparoscopy and robotics, as well as the chance to discuss clinical decisions with trainees working in different healthcare settings.

The exchange also gave them an opportunity to build friendships and professional connections with colleagues from across Europe and beyond. They returned with renewed enthusiasm for urology and encouraged future trainees to apply for the programme.
