Spotlight on Urology

Spotlight on Urology takes a look at recent activities undertaken to advance urology around the world. This week, we provide updates on news regarding Prostate Cancer Awareness Month, highlighting the importance of testing early.

Prostate Cancer Media

There continues to be strong interest in the USANZ press release on prostate cancer. This follows previous coverage announced in UroNews on 11 September and 18 September.

This week, the media coverage focused on patient experiences, supported by expert commentary by USANZ Members.

NewsCorp outlets featured Melbourne father Greg Jacobs, who shared how his routine blood test led to a diagnosis of aggressive prostate cancer. Greg, who was age 52 at the time, felt well at the time. He hopes his experience will encourage other men to speak with their GP about testing.

Also in the article, USANZ Vice President Ashani Couchman explained that men can discuss their individual risk with their GP without waiting for symptoms. She addressed a common concern about testing: a digital rectal examination is no longer required at the initial GP visit under the revised national guidelines.

The article has since been syndicated across more than 20 NewsCorp mastheads, extending the reach of this message.

The Senior published Norman Beck's story. Norman raised urinary concerns with his GP, initially blaming coffee intake. This led to a detection of prostate cancer. Alongside Norman's personal experiences, USANZ Genitourinary Oncology SAG Leader Weranja Ranasinghe explains that prostate cancer can develop without obvious symptoms and discusses the role of PSA blood testing in early detection.
